Academic Alliances


TCS believes in investing in research to build new and innovative solutions that help increase the overall Intellectual capital base. With this focus, TCS has established academic alliances and R & D collaboration with institutes globally. These alliances become important in research contexts that typically require long time frames, and a space protected from business pressures. For universities, such alliances promise student and faculty exposure to real-world problems.

The TCS-university collaborations go well beyond the traditional research relationships. Conceptualized as highly interactive collaborations that encourage a continuous flow of ideas between academia and TCS, these help enrich the overall innovation landscape. Models of Collaboration have included Sponsored Research Projects, Student Internships, Short Interaction Visits to TCS Innovation Labs, Inbound and Outbound Sabbatical Programs, Joint Seminars, workshops, Conferences, and even Sponsoring of a Professorship in Computer Science.

We highlight here the aim and goals of our academic alliance program, the advantages to universities, our current and recent alliances and the areas of research. We adopt a transparent Process, and encourage several Models Of Collaboration.

We have Academic Alliances in Asia and North America. Some fruitful and recently concluded projects include European universities as well.

TCS Research Fellowship - Announcement

The TCS Research Fellowship is being established to enhance the talent base in the country. The TCS Research Fellowship was announced by N. Chandrasekaran, CEO & MD of TCS, at Sangam 2009, the TCS Annual Academic Meet. TCS will sponsor an annual intake of 40 research students for a PhD programme in computer science, across India, for five years, starting 2010 – 2011 (making it 200 in the plan period). Read more...

Aim

The aim of the COIN Academic Alliance program of TCS is to foster joint research and innovation through a mutually beneficial alliance between the industry and academia. Specifically it is focused on examining real-world problems chosen by the academia (preferably, jointly with TCS R&D groups that are likely to be involved in the research). While some real-world problems may have concrete solutions only in the long-term, the program strives to achieve a deeper understanding and the  development of mechanisms to address such problems.

Goals 

The goals of TCS academic alliances are to:

  • Support High Quality Research
  • Impact Sustaining Innovation
  • Have a Long term impact on Disruptive Innovation
  • Provide Internship Opportunities especially for doctoral students
  • Facilitate Knowledge Exchange & People Development
  • Develop an Innovation Partner Ecosystem
  • Encourage collaboration amongst academic partners through support for centers of Innovation

 

The Advantages

There are perceived advantages to both the University and TCS through such collaboration. 

For Universities:

  • Understanding the complexities of real-world data and situations
  • Ability to conceptualize and engineer effective solutions
  • Testing out some of the ideas in a near real-world scenario
  • Opportunity to interact and use some of the vast real-world engineering and solution-creation experience in TCS. 

For TCS:

  • Understanding the theory and concepts behind new techniques
  • Getting involved in the development of new mechanisms to deal with problems
